Macavity—A Master Criminal
The poem is about a cat called Macavity. He is also called the “Hidden Paw”. The cat is a great criminal. He has openly disobeyed the law. Yet the police of Scotland Yard is helpless before Macavity. Sometimes the Flying Squad runs after it. However, the squad is always disappointed. The cat is never found by it. Macavity moves much faster than the Flying Squad.

Macavity—A Breaker of the Laws of Nature
The poet is sure that there has been no creature like Macavity. Macavity has broken not only human laws but even the laws of nature. He floats in the air without any support. Thus, he breaks the nature’s law of gravitation. The fakirs are supposed to have some magical powers but even they stare upon Macavity. Yet, the wonder of wonders is that when one rushes to the scene of the crime, Macavity is not found. Those who look after him find him neither in the basement (i.e., under the earth), nor in the air (i.e., sky).

Macavity—Appearance
Macavity is a very special cat. He is very tall and thin. It’s very easy to recognise him. His eyes are deep set in his face. His brow has deep wrinkles as if he is lost in deep thoughts. Due to constant neglect his skin is full of dust. You will find him swaying his head from side to side just as a snake does. He is an expert cheat. When you feel he is asleep, he is only dozing. In fact Macavity is always alert.

Macavity’s Character
Macavity is unique. He is evil incarnate. Ordinarily you can find him anywhere—in a by-street or in a square. However, when you want to punish him for a crime, he is nowhere to be seen.

मैकाविटी-अपराधियों का सरदार
यह कविता मैकाविटी नाम के बिल्ले (नर बिल्ली) के बारे में है। उसका एक नाम ‘गुप्त पंजा’ भी है। यह बिल्ला बहुत बड़ा अपराधी है। इसने कानून का खुल्लमखुल्ला उल्लंघन किया है फिर भी स्काटलैंड यार्ड की पुलिस मैकाविटी के सामने लाचार है। उड़न दस्ती कभी-कभी इसके पीछे दौड़ता है। पर उसे (दस्ते को) सदा | निराशा ही हाथ लगती है। बिल्ला कभी उसके हाथ नहीं लगता है। मैकाविटी उड़न दस्ते की अपेक्षा अधिक तेज दौड़ता है।

मैकाविटी-प्राकृतिक नियमों का उल्लंघन करने वाला
कवि को विश्वास है कि मैकाविटी जैसा कोई प्राणी आज तक नहीं हुआ। मैकाविटी ने न केवल मानव के बनाये कानूनों को बल्कि प्रकृति के नियमों को भी तोड़ा है। वह बिना किसी सहारे के हवा में तैरता है। इस प्रकार वह प्रकृति के गुरुत्वाकर्षण नियम को तोड़ता है। कहते हैं फकीरों के पास कोई जादुई ताकत होती है, पर वे भी मैकाविटी को घूरते रह जाते हैं। पर सबसे बड़ा आश्चर्य तो यह है कि जब कोई अपराध-स्थल पर पहुँचता है तो उसे मैकाविटी कभी नहीं मिलता है। उसे खोजने वाले उसे न तो बेसमैंट में (अर्थात जमीन के नीचे) और न जमीन के ऊपर हवा में (आकाश में) देख पाते हैं।

मैकाविटी-शक्ल
मैकाविटी बड़ा विशेष बिल्ला है। वह बड़ा लंबा और पतला है। उसे पहचानना बड़ा आसान है। उसकी आँखें उसके चेहरे में अंदर धंसी हैं। उसके माथे पर गहरी लकीरें हैं, मानो वह गहरे विचारों में खोया हो। कभी साफ ने किए जाने के कारण उसकी त्वचा धूल-धूसरित है। तुम उसे एक साँप की तरह अपना सिर इधर-उधर हिलाते देखोगे। वह कुशल ठग है। जब तुम्हें लगेगा कि वह सो रहा है, वह सिर्फ ऊँघ रहा होता है। वास्तव में मैकाविटी सदा सतर्क रहता है।

मैकाविटी का चरित्र
मैकाविटी अद्भुत है। वह बुराई का अवतार है। सामान्यत: वह आपको कहीं भी दिख जाएगा-किसी गली में अथवा चौक में। पर जब किसी अपराध की सजा देने के लिए आप उसे खोजेंगे तब वह कहीं नहीं मिलेगा।
